That’s what it comes down to in the Midterms. What a terrible choice our political system has created for us. But I believe we have to vote, and so I’ve made my choice, though I’m not happy about it, and I wish there were a third viable alternative.
Despite what he tells us, President Trump is not on the ballot, and that’s actually a good thing. After his overblown personality has created problem after problem, my initial optimism for his Presidency has been erased, and it would have to be a one-on-one with Bernie Sanders for me to vote for him again. See a post from February for some early warnings about what his self-centered rants and mistakes might do to our nation.
But if, to rebuke his increasingly questionable choices, policies and executive orders, which regularly undermine principled conservative values, I were instead to vote a straight Democratic ticket, or to not vote at all, to show my displeasure, what would I accomplish?
If these were my father’s Democrats, I might vote for many of them, but they are not. If they win, we will get two to six, or more, years of truly awful policies, plus attacks on the very nature of government in America, as has been proposed by various members of the increasingly socialist/whacko Democratic Big Tent:
- Expand the Supreme Court and set term limits on Justices.

- Statehood for D.C. and Puerto Rico.
- Defund/Dismantle the Police and Prisons.
- Return to Climate Change/Green Energy Doomsday Policies
- Abortion Without Restriction
- Return to DEI Identity Group policies instead of Individual Merit.
- Reduce Defense Spending in a Dangerous World.
- Abolish the Borders once again and Welcome Everyone Without Restriction.
- Medicare for All, at any cost in money and disruption.
- Universal Childcare (and next generation Progressive Programing).
- More Power to the Teachers’ Unions to further destroy our Education System.
- Rent Control to further Reduce the Housing Stock and Drive Up Prices.
- Increased Minimum Wage to further Reduce Entry Level Jobs.
- Abolish ICE (I detest their current detention policies, but we need the Agency).
- Increase Government Giveaway Programs, leading to more fraud and theft.
- Endless Hearings and Lawfare Initiatives Against Trump, Musk, and a huge cast.
- No Hope of Reducing the Deficit or the National Debt, with terrible consequences.
And there are more. Is that what I want? Obviously not.
But that’s the binary choice we’ve been given. After considering all of the above, I’ve decided to walk into the booth and pull the Republican lever, not because I want to support our current leader, but because I don’t want to destroy our country with absurd Democratic policies, as that party skews further to the Left with every new candidate.
My hope is that if rational conservatives, independents and traditional liberals can beat back the crazy Democratic Big Tent, we might then make it through the final two years of Trump’s Lame Duck Presidency during which true servant-leaders in the Republican Party, no longer fearing his wrath, will regain their voices and move us back towards Principled Conservatism, rather than The Art of the Deal with Tyrants, and Social Media rants.
And maybe even work again with mainstream Democrats to actually improve the nation, rather than just seeking to score social media points.
See this recent post for a list of five possible Republican leaders with those qualities.
It boils down to making it through two more years with ever-increasing guardrails in place with a Republican House and Senate, or potentially many years of ever-increasing, terrible, left-wing policies which could dramatically and permanently change the very nature of our country (and cost a huge amount in money, regulations and lost growth).
It’s not a good choice. I wish we had others. I pray regularly for better leaders. But I’ve reluctantly decided what I will do.
See you on the other side.
And always remember, through all of this, that thankfully God is in charge, not us.
